In the meantime, Archibald was involved in a gruesome battle for survival. “The night was carnage”, he said. “I had sharks swimming past me. I got stung by a jelly fish. Seagulls even tried to pick my eyes out and I have got big holes in my nose.”

“It was insane, just insane. I actually gave up.”

Still, Archibald says he pulled himself together and managed to swim and tread water for 28 hours – although he says he nearly drowned eight times.

Shark attacks surfer off Kauai

LIHUE, KAUAI (HawaiiNewsNow) - The Kauai Police Department says a shark attacked a surfer Wednesday afternoon at Pakala’s surf spot on the west side of the island.

According to police the a 60-year-old man identified by friends only as “Lorrin” from Kalaheo was attacked by a shark while surfing with two friends at a west side surf break known as “Pakala’s.”

Kai Rittgers saw a tannish-gray blur in the water near his surfboard. “It was like this sharp little pain, then I kind of sat up really quick and saw it was a shark,” Kai said. The boy said he shook his left foot, which left the 2- to 3-foot shark “squirming around on the board” for a few seconds.

Great white shark spotted near surf competition

Francisco Javier Solorio Jr., 39, was an avid surfer who had frequented the spot since he was a boy. He is survived by his wife and their young daughter.
